Chesterton, IN – A parent and child suffered smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire on South 15th Street in early June. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 2:37 p.m. on Sunday, June 8th, encountering smoke coming from the front door.
According to the Chesterton Fire Department, crews from Porter, Liberty Township, and Portage Fire Departments assisted. Firefighters ran a hose into the home and quickly contained the fire in the kitchen.
The fire originated above the stove and refrigerator. Crews extinguished the flames and ensured no other parts of the home were affected.
The family initially evacuated safely, but re-entered to rescue their cat, leading to their injuries. They were transported to Northwest Health-Porter for treatment. The family’s cat was later found safe. Fire officials ruled the cause of the fire unintentional.
