A sharp, late-season cold snap is building behind lingering rain, setting up a biting temperature drop that could catch gardens and early crops off guard across northern Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late tonight through Saturday morning, with temperatures falling as low as 28°F across Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, and into nearby Michigan and Ohio communities.

This is part of a broader system pushing much-below-average temperatures across the Midwest, reinforcing an unusually cold stretch for early May.

Rain continues through midday, leaving wet pavement and reduced visibility on I-69, US-30, and local roads. As skies clear later, temperatures will drop quickly after sunset. That combination sets the stage for rapid cooling and frost formation, especially in low-lying farmland and rural drainage areas around Fort Wayne and Warsaw.

The biggest impact is on agriculture and home gardens. Sensitive plants, early corn, and flowering trees could suffer damage or complete loss if left exposed. Urban neighborhoods may stay slightly warmer, but outskirts and open fields face the highest freeze risk.

Drivers should also watch for patchy slick spots early Saturday. Moisture from today’s rain may briefly freeze on bridges and shaded roads, creating localized hazards during early travel.

Looking ahead, conditions improve quickly. Sunshine returns Saturday afternoon, with temperatures rebounding into the low 50s. By Sunday and Monday, highs climb into the 60s and 70s, signaling a gradual spring recovery.

Five-day outlook:
Saturday: Early freeze, then partly sunny, high near 52°F
Sunday: Warmer, high near 61°F
Monday: Milder, high near 72°F with slight storm chance
Tuesday: Showers likely, high near mid 60s
Wednesday: Scattered showers, high near 60°F
