Indianapolis, IN – Indiana officials are encouraging residents to recognize the importance of the state’s lakes after Gov. Mike Braun officially proclaimed July as Lakes Appreciation Month, highlighting the role lakes and reservoirs play in the state’s environment, economy, and quality of life.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Indiana is home to more than 100,000 acres of lakes that support wildlife, recreation, drinking water, irrigation, and tourism while creating opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, and other outdoor activities.
Gov. Braun signed the proclamation on Tuesday, July 1, officially designating July 2026 as Lakes Appreciation Month throughout Indiana. The proclamation recognizes lakes and reservoirs as some of the state’s most valuable natural resources and notes their importance to Indiana’s history, economic growth, and financial well-being.
The proclamation also highlights the state’s longstanding efforts to protect its waterways through initiatives such as the Lakes Preservation Act and Indiana’s participation in the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact and the Lake and River Enhancement Program.
According to the DNR, the annual observance is intended to encourage Hoosiers to appreciate and help preserve Indiana’s lakes for future generations. Officials say healthy lakes provide essential habitat for wildlife while supporting local communities through recreation, tourism, and water resources.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources encourages residents to enjoy the state’s lakes responsibly throughout July while helping protect water quality by following conservation and boating safety practices.
