Porter County, IN — The I-94 gas leak near Portage is expected to keep the highway closed for at least three more hours, according to the Portage Fire Chief, Indiana State Police report. This means the closure could extend beyond 5 p.m. as crews work to secure the gas line that was struck earlier by a construction crew.
Indiana State Police have advised motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, with the Indiana Toll Road being the best option. Traffic on side roads is becoming increasingly congested, particularly around the city of Portage.
The leak, which occurred on the 6700 block of Daniel Burnham Drive, has caused a significant disruption, but no injuries have been reported. Emergency teams, including NIPSCO, are on the scene working to resolve the situation, but the road will likely remain closed until late this afternoon. Travelers are urged to stay updated through local traffic alerts and avoid the area if possible.
