Elkhart, IN – A freak accident involving an airborne deer unfolded Thursday, March 7, that ended with a man losing his life. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Cassopolis Road and Bullhand Street, marking a somber moment for the Elkhart community.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the sequence of events began when a 20-year-old woman from Osceola, traveling northbound, struck a deer. The impact was so forceful that it sent the deer flying through the air, directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The deer crashed through the windshield of the southbound car, driven by 67-year-old Daniel Haskett, causing him to lose control and veer off the roadway.

Emergency services arrived promptly at the scene, but tragically, Haskett was pronounced dead upon their arrival. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the unpredictability of driving on roads frequented by wildlife, especially during the hours of dusk and dawn when animals are most active. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to remain vigilant and cautious, highlighting the importance of wildlife awareness for preventing future accidents of this nature. As the weather begins to warm, wildlife, particularly deer, become more active and frequently cross roads and highways, increasing the risk of vehicle collisions.
