Brook, IN – As cooler weather arrives, Indiana firefighters are urging residents to be vigilant about seasonal fire hazards. A house fire in Brook serves as a reminder of the increased risk. Firefighters responded to a blaze caused by a candle left burning in a residence on West Main Street on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Brook-Iroquois Township Volunteer Fire Department, a passerby noticed smoke at 4:30 p.m. and alerted Newton County dispatch. The Kentland-Jefferson Township Fire Department was called for mutual aid. Firefighters from both departments quickly contained the fire to a single room, preventing further damage.
The home’s resident, Lou Jennings, was not present during the fire. The fire’s cause was attributed to a candle left unattended, a common risk during the fall season. Firefighters remained on the scene for about an hour.
One Brook firefighter sustained a minor hand injury and was treated by Newton County EMS.
