Crown Point, IN – The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is actively seeking qualified volunteers to join its Underwater Recovery and Rescue Unit, inviting applicants to become part of the Sheriff’s Dive Team.

The role is strictly voluntary and unpaid, but plays a vital role in underwater search and rescue operations throughout the region.

According to a post shared by the department Wednesday morning, interested individuals must possess a Basic Open Water Diver certification from SDI or another nationally certified dive training agency, and be in excellent physical condition. Applicants must also submit a physician-signed physical exam form, maintain a full set of approved dive equipment, and remain available to respond to dive-related emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round.

Candidates must also attend mandatory monthly meetings and training dives.

Prospective team members will undergo a multi-step evaluation process, which includes panel interviews, a Basic Open Water Diver competency test, a dive equipment use assessment, and a swim test. Required forms include a membership application, a basic dive equipment list, and a diver physical form.

Applications can be downloaded online through the Lake County Sheriff’s official website. Completed applications must be printed, sealed in an envelope, and either dropped off or mailed to:
