Gary, IN – The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a warning for potentially crippling lake-effect snow in parts of northwest Indiana, particularly impacting Porter County and its vicinity.

Snow accumulation rates could surpass 2 inches per hour, paired with wind gusts of up to 40 mph, making travel near impossible. Whiteout conditions are expected, and residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel. The region is also preparing for a blast of arctic air with wind chills estimated to reach between -15 to -25 degrees Fahrenheit, further compounding the hazardous conditions.

The forecast advises caution due to the likelihood of shifting snow bands and the ongoing risk of ice jams leading to localized flooding along area rivers. The community should remain alert and follow updates as the situation develops.
