Joliet, Illinois – Drivers in Joliet should prepare for significant delays this weekend as eastbound I-80 between Houbolt Road and Richards Street will be reduced to one lane starting at 10 p.m. Friday.
According to I-80 Will, the Illinois Department of Transportation will close ramps from Chicago Street to eastbound I-80 and restrict traffic to a single lane for bridge deck repairs and pavement patching. All lanes and ramps are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. These closures will repeat the following weekend, weather permitting.
Westbound I-80 will remain unaffected, but heavy congestion is anticipated in the eastbound lanes. Commuters and freight drivers are urged to seek alternate routes, especially during peak hours. The project spans a high-traffic stretch often used for regional logistics and daily commutes.
Motorists traveling through the area should plan for extra travel time, avoid distractions, and follow posted detours. Electronic message boards will provide real-time updates.
Weekend lane and ramp closures are set to return next Friday night. Travelers can check I80Will.org for updates throughout the construction period.
