Chicago, IL – An Illinois State Police (ISP) trooper was injured Monday night on the Bishop Ford Expressway after being struck by a motorist who allegedly failed to move over. The incident happened around 10 p.m. on Interstate 94 southbound near Cottage Grove Avenue as the trooper was handling a separate investigation with emergency lights activated.
According to ISP, an Infiniti sedan attempted to change lanes but lost control, colliding with the squad car. The trooper was transported to the hospital with injuries. Police identified the driver as Shylyn J. Richmond, 25, of Lansing, Illinois. Richmond faces multiple charges, including aggravated Scott’s Law violation, driving under the influence, and other Illinois Vehicle Code violations.
This incident marks the second time in two days that a trooper was struck in Chicago. On November 4, another trooper was injured on Interstate 57. ISP reports that this is the 22nd Scott’s Law-related incident involving a trooper in Illinois this year, with 11 officers injured statewide.
Scott’s Law, also known as the Move Over Law, mandates drivers to slow down and switch lanes when approaching emergency vehicles with lights activated. Fines range from $250 to $10,000, with potential license suspension for violations that cause injury.
