Chicago, IL – Two key ramps along the outbound Kennedy Expressway in Chicago will close Thursday, as part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s ongoing bridge and pavement rehabilitation project.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Division Street ramp to the outbound Kennedy (Interstate 90/94) has been rescheduled to close Thursday, June 5, due to weather conditions. It was originally slated for June 11. The ramp from the outbound Kennedy to North Avenue will also close on the same day. Both closures are anticipated to last approximately two weeks.
Additional ramp closures are expected next week. On Wednesday, June 11, the outbound Kennedy ramp to Fullerton Avenue will close. Two other ramps are already closed — from the outbound Kennedy to Ohio Street and from Armitage Avenue to the outbound Kennedy — and are expected to reopen by the end of the week.
Drivers are advised to follow posted detours and allow extra travel time. IDOT cautioned that weather and other variables may affect the project schedule, and future ramp closures will be announced in advance.
Motorists should expect significant delays and are encouraged to travel during off-peak hours or use public transportation, including the CTA Blue Line and Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line.
The $150 million Kennedy Expressway rehab project is set to continue through late fall, with completion projected by Thanksgiving.
