Peotone, IL – The Peotone Historical Society has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise just shy of $1 million for urgent repairs to the town’s iconic 1872 windmill, Millie. The windmill, a landmark and symbol of community pride, has fallen into disrepair, with damaged beams, decaying sails, and structural issues threatening its future.
Ed Nelson, president of the Peotone Historical Society, explained that the funds are necessary to restore Millie to her former glory. The project will focus on replacing rotten beams, repairing the sails, and fixing the second-floor balcony. “Millie has been at the heart of our community for generations, and now it’s time for us to come together to save her,” Nelson said.
Millie, once used to grind wheat and oats for local farmers, stands 60 feet tall and has long been a symbol of Peotone’s history. The goal is to complete repairs in time for the mill’s 152nd anniversary during the town’s Old Mill Fall Fest.
The Peotone Historical Society is calling on community members and supporters to donate to the GoFundMe campaign. Every donation, large or small, will help ensure that Millie remains standing for generations to come.
