Geneseo, IL – The Geneseo Police Department is investigating ATM skimming devices placed throughout central Illinois. These devices are used to steal account data from victims by attaching to card readers. The skimmer records information from the card’s chip, and a camera captures video of cardholders entering their PINs. Financial institutions are working with impacted customers to secure their accounts.

Police identified a suspect during a stakeout of a targeted ATM. Officers witnessed the suspect approach a machine that had been tampered with previously. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the suspect fled.

The pursuit led officers down US Highway 6, onto Oakwood Avenue, and eventually to Interstate 80. The vehicle hit the median, causing a tire to flatten. Officers apprehended the 17-year-old suspect at the 21-mile marker.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois State Police assisted in the arrest and evidence collection. The suspect is facing charges of fraud, fleeing, and eluding, along with multiple traffic citations.
