Springfield, IL – As summer travel increases across Illinois highways, the Illinois State Police are urging drivers to take precautions in the event of roadside emergencies.

According to a social media alert shared Tuesday, the department emphasized the risks of pulling over on busy interstates due to car trouble, flat tires, or other emergencies. Motorists are advised to activate hazard lights immediately and pull completely out of traffic lanes when stopping is unavoidable.

The alert advises drivers to remain buckled inside their vehicle and call for assistance rather than attempting repairs or walking along the shoulder. “Exiting your vehicle, even if it’s entirely on the shoulder, is very dangerous,” the department stated.

For vehicles that are still drivable, officials strongly recommend relocating off the interstate to a safer location. Drivers are also reminded of Illinois’ Move Over Law, also known as Scott’s Law, which requires drivers to slow down and change lanes, if possible, when approaching vehicles with hazard or emergency lights activated.

The campaign aims to reduce the risk of roadside fatalities, particularly during high-traffic summer travel periods. The message includes hashtags like #ScottsLaw and #MoveOver to increase public awareness on social platforms.

The Illinois State Police continue to emphasize safe driving practices and encourage drivers to share the alert to help prevent roadside tragedies during the summer months.
