Illinois Road Rage Shooting on I-57 Ends in Iroquois County with Attempted Murder Charge

Pesotum, IL – Illinois State Police arrested a 40-year-old man from East St. Louis after a road rage shooting incident on Interstate 57. LeJoshua C. Smith faces attempted murder and additional felony charges following a pursuit across multiple counties.

According to Illinois State Police (ISP), officers responded to reports of shots fired near milepost 223 on Wednesday. The incident stemmed from a minor collision between two vehicles. Smith allegedly fired a weapon at the victim’s vehicle, causing damage, but no injuries were reported.

ISP officers quickly located Smith’s vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but he fled north on I-57. Officers pursued Smith through Ford and Iroquois counties before deploying stop sticks, successfully stopping his vehicle near Gilman. He was taken into custody.

Smith was charged Thursday in Champaign County with attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and multiple traffic violations. Additional charges may follow from Iroquois County. Authorities have not released further details.

Smith remains innocent until proven guilty in court.
