Crete Township, IL – Two new art exhibits opening this week at Forest Preserve District of Will County visitor centers aim to immerse viewers in the beauty of prairie life and native bird species through the eyes of local artists.

“Prairie Reverie” opens Wednesday at Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete Township, while “The Joy of Birds: The Art of Robert Hafey” launches Thursday at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon.

According to the Forest Preserve District, “Prairie Reverie” features over 30 original works by Orland Park-based artist Carrie Carlson. The display, open through Sunday, Aug. 24, includes paintings, drawings, linoleum block prints, and ceramics—many inspired by field sketches from Carlson’s nature journals. She also plans to lead a printmaking workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, at the nature center.

Carlson, a science and art teacher, said her work is designed to encourage deeper awareness of local wildlife. “The bold details in the artwork will hopefully inspire a closer look at the flora and fauna right outside our own doors,” she said.

“The Joy of Birds,” running through Sunday, July 6, showcases 20 watercolor paintings by Homer Glen artist Robert Hafey. Based on bird photographs taken during hikes on local trails, Hafey’s collection ranges from backyard favorites to more elusive species.

A Meet the Artist event with Hafey is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, and includes a raffle for a free print and select artwork for sale.

Both exhibits are free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
