Godley, IL – Starting September 16, 2024, Illinois residents will see high-tech vans equipped with advanced scanning technology surveying roadways. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) has contracted with Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) to assess pavement conditions in Godley, Indian Head Park, Palos Heights, and Richton Park. The evaluations will run through October 18, 2024.
ARA’s Digital Survey Vehicles are designed to identify various forms of road damage, such as cracks, potholes, and other surface deterioration. Using lasers and high-resolution imagery, the vans will collect precise data on road conditions, helping municipalities plan for necessary repairs.
According to ARA, these vehicles can scan road surfaces with extreme accuracy, detecting changes as small as two-thousandths of an inch. The data will help prioritize road maintenance efforts, ensuring safer and smoother roads for drivers.
This cutting-edge technology aims to enhance road longevity while minimizing repair costs. Local engineering teams will use the findings to develop more efficient long-term maintenance strategies, including preventative techniques like crack sealing and asphalt resurfacing.
