Norway, IL – A full day of Nordic tradition and community spirit returns this Saturday as the Norsk Museum launches its 2025 season with the annual Taste of Norway breakfast and cultural festival.

A traditional Norwegian breakfast will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Norway Community Building, located at 3656 E. 2631st Rd. in Sheridan. Guests can enjoy fried Kumla, ham, chive-scrambled eggs, fruit cups and coffee, all free of charge with donations accepted to support the preservation of the historic Norway Temperance Hall.

According to organizers, the museum festivities will follow from 1 to 5 p.m. on the museum grounds with an afternoon steeped in Norwegian culture. A life-size replica Viking ship, The Skagerrak, will be on display, while demonstrations in rosemaling (decorative painting), stitchwork and traditional krumkake-making will highlight Nordic craftsmanship.

Children will be invited to participate in a “How to Be a Viking” activity and watch the classic Viking lawn game of Kubb. Norwegian pastries will be available, provided by members of the Sons of Norway Polar Star Lodge in Montgomery and Cleng Peerson Lodge in Ottawa.

Run by volunteers and funded through community events and donations, the Norsk Museum is open to the public on weekends from June through October, with group tours available by appointment.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate our heritage with the community,” said Dave Johnson, board president of the Norsk Museum. “We invite stories, photos, artifacts, or volunteers to help preserve our legacy.”

The event also honors the legacy of Cleng Peerson, who led the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to settle in America, eventually relocating to LaSalle County to begin farming west of Chicago.
