Sun Prairie, WI – Twenty farmers markets across Illinois are receiving a funding boost ahead of the spring season, with nearly $20,000 awarded to support local food access and community engagement.
According to Compeer Financial, a total of $19,750 was distributed through its Compeer Giving program to markets across the state. The initiative is designed to strengthen connections between farmers and consumers while supporting economic growth in rural and urban communities.
Officials say the majority of recipients—about 86%—plan to use the funding for marketing efforts, including social media campaigns, signage, and local advertising to increase visibility and attract more visitors and vendors.
Additional funding will support infrastructure improvements such as tents, tables, and point-of-sale systems, along with expanded access to food programs like SNAP and EBT. Some markets also plan to invest in vendor training to improve long-term sustainability.
The 20 Illinois markets selected collectively serve more than 990,000 visitors each year, spanning communities including Aurora, DeKalb, Peoria, Quincy, Woodstock, and Chicago neighborhoods like Lincoln Square and Garfield Park.
According to Compeer Giving officials, farmers markets play a key role in connecting communities while helping local producers share fresh, locally grown food.
To qualify, markets must be established, open to the public, and include multiple vendors offering locally produced agricultural goods.
Compeer Financial, a member-owned cooperative serving Illinois and the Upper Midwest, says the program is part of its broader effort to invest in agriculture and rural communities.
