Williamson County, IL – A Williamson County Sheriff’s deputy was injured Thursday evening while responding to an emergency call in Pittsburg.
The deputy was driving northbound on Pittsburg Road at 6:35 p.m. when he struck a deer near Khoury League Road. According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, the impact caused the patrol vehicle to leave the roadway, roll down a steep embankment, and stop in water at the bottom of a ravine.
The crash left the vehicle heavily damaged. Emergency responders had to extract the deputy, who suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a local trauma center for surgery and will likely be transferred to a St. Louis regional center for further treatment.
Sheriff Jeff Diederich expressed gratitude that the injuries were not worse, stating, “We are thankful this deputy will recover and return to service soon.”
The deputy was wearing a seatbelt, which likely reduced the severity of his injuries. Authorities also thanked the Illinois State Police, United Ambulance, and local firefighters for their assistance.
Good Samaritans on the scene provided aid before first responders arrived. The crash highlights the risks law enforcement faces daily.
