Springfield, IL – A cold front sweeping across central and eastern Illinois is prompting a Frost Advisory that will remain in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. CDT Wednesday, with potential impacts on plants and agricultural activity.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, temperatures are expected to dip as low as 34°F overnight, creating conditions ripe for frost formation. The advisory spans a wide region including Peoria, Springfield, Bloomington-Normal, Decatur, Champaign, and Danville, among others.

Sensitive outdoor vegetation could suffer damage or be killed if left unprotected. Residents in the advisory area are urged to cover or bring in plants, particularly those in low-lying or unshielded areas.

The affected counties include Knox, Peoria, Tazewell, McLean, Sangamon, Macon, and surrounding areas stretching into southeastern zones like Effingham and Crawford.

April frost events are not unusual for Illinois, but this advisory comes after several days of warmer spring temperatures, increasing the vulnerability of early budding plants.

Homeowners, gardeners, and farmers are advised to take immediate precautions. Covering plants with breathable material or relocating potted vegetation indoors can prevent potential losses.

Temperatures are expected to rebound into the 50s and 60s later Wednesday, reducing frost risk through the remainder of the week.
