Old Forge, NY – A late-season snow system is bringing hazardous travel conditions to Northern Herkimer County, where snowfall is expected to continue into the early morning hours Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 2 a.m. EDT Thursday. Forecasters say an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is likely, especially in areas north of Route 28, including the towns of Old Forge, Big Moose, and McKeever. Wind gusts could reach up to 35 mph, reducing visibility and making driving conditions treacherous.
Local officials urge drivers to use caution, especially on secondary roads and elevated surfaces that may become slick quickly. Snowfall rates may vary through the evening, but higher terrain north of Route 28 is expected to receive the most accumulation.
The April storm marks an unseasonable return to winter-like conditions in the Adirondack region, where spring snowfalls are not unusual but can still pose travel and safety challenges. Residents should allow extra time for commuting and consider delaying non-essential travel until conditions improve early Thursday.
Motorists are advised to reduce speed, maintain extra stopping distance, and remain alert for changing road conditions.
