Chicago, IL – A salmonella outbreak linked to whole cucumbers has prompted a multistate recall, with at least 26 people allegedly sickened across 15 states including Illinois, California, New York, and Pennsylvania, federal health officials announced.
According to the CDC and FDA, the cucumbers were grown by Florida-based Bedner Growers Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. between April 29 and May 19. The contaminated produce was distributed to major grocery retailers and food service locations nationwide.
Health officials have advised consumers to throw away any cucumbers purchased during that time if they cannot confirm their origin. The affected cucumbers were not organic and may have been sold individually or in smaller packages labeled “supers,” “selects,” or “plains.”
Nine hospitalizations have been reported as part of the outbreak, though no deaths have been confirmed. Several people reportedly consumed the cucumbers aboard cruise ships departing from Florida ports.
Businesses are being instructed not to sell or serve any of the recalled cucumbers and to sanitize surfaces and tools that may have come into contact with them. Retailers are also encouraged to notify customers who may have purchased the affected products.
Salmonella symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms such as persistent vomiting or dehydration should contact a healthcare provider.
