Chicago, IL – Two Secret Service agents were denied entry to Hamline Elementary School in Chicago on Friday, fueling concerns in immigrant communities amid a nationwide escalation of immigration enforcement. Initially mistaken for ICE officials due to their Department of Homeland Security credentials, the agents were turned away under Chicago Public Schools (CPS) protocols.

The incident comes as the Trump administration ramps up deportation efforts, targeting schools and churches despite past restrictions on enforcement in sensitive locations. CPS confirmed that no students or staff were questioned and reiterated its commitment to the City of Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, which bars ICE agents from entering school facilities without a judicial warrant.

Nationwide, enforcement operations have led to 538 arrests and 373 detainers since Monday, according to ICE. Federal authorities have focused on individuals with criminal records, bond violations, or outstanding warrants. Chicago has been identified as a key target, sparking preparations by schools and churches to provide sanctuary and resources to immigrant families.

CPS has instructed staff to follow strict protocols in the event of ICE activity, while many schools have created sanctuary teams to train educators on how to protect students and families during enforcement encounters. Churches have also increased their outreach efforts, offering Know Your Rights training and safe spaces for those at risk of detention.

The Chicago Police Department reaffirmed its non-cooperation policy with ICE, stating it does not enforce immigration laws or share information with federal authorities. CPS and community organizations remain on high alert, emphasizing the importance of supporting immigrant families during this period of heightened enforcement.
