Waco, Texas – Severe storms could sweep across Central and East Texas Sunday afternoon and evening, bringing the threat of damaging winds, tennis ball-sized hail, and even isolated tornadoes to cities including Waco, College Station, and Houston.
According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10:00 p.m. CDT for 37 counties from Palo Pinto and McLennan to Harris and Liberty. The most intense storms could generate hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter and wind gusts topping 70 mph.
Areas of concern include I-35 through Waco and Killeen, I-45 from Corsicana to Conroe, and the Houston metro area, where wind damage and downed trees may lead to scattered power outages. A couple of tornadoes are also possible, especially in stronger supercells developing in unstable air.
Residents are urged to stay indoors when storms approach, charge devices now, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for any warnings. Travel could become hazardous this evening due to wind-blown debris and reduced visibility.
This is the first widespread severe weather event of June in Texas. Additional warnings may be issued through the night.
