Billings, Montana – Snow will return to the Beartooth Highway early Monday, potentially snarling travel with slippery conditions and gusty winds through Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. Monday through 6 a.m. Wednesday for the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains, including the high-altitude stretch of U.S. Route 212. Snow totals of 2 to 4 inches are likely, with gusts up to 35 mph reducing visibility.

The heaviest snowfall is expected Monday night into Tuesday morning, when conditions along the pass could become treacherous. Drivers heading to or from Red Lodge or Cooke City should prepare for icy switchbacks and blowing snow.

Montana Department of Transportation urges travelers to slow down, use caution, and check road status at 511MT.net before departing. Those in smaller vehicles or towing trailers should consider delaying travel until midweek.

Although June snow isn’t uncommon at higher elevations, this early-month system marks the first advisory-level event since mid-May.

More alerts may be issued as weather evolves. Conditions are expected to improve by late Wednesday morning.
