Streator, IL – A fire that tore through a Streator home Tuesday night is under investigation as suspicious, officials confirmed, after crews from La Salle County responded to reports of smoke and flames on North Everett Street.
According to the Streator Fire Department, units were dispatched at 6:36 p.m. to a residence at 1001 North Everett St., where smoke was seen pouring from the structure. Firefighters arrived within four minutes and brought the blaze under control by 6:58 p.m., deploying a quick attack strategy with assistance from Reading Township and Grand Ridge Fire Departments.
All residents escaped unharmed, but two cats were found dead and two more remain missing. The home sustained major damage, particularly in the rear kitchen and back entrance areas, with fire, smoke and water damage reported throughout the structure.
Authorities say the cause of the fire is suspicious. A subject has been apprehended and questioned in connection to the incident, though further details were not released. The Streator Police Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office are assisting in the ongoing investigation.
Eight firefighters and two EMS personnel from Streator responded to the scene, with no injuries reported. Crews remained on site until shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday. The residents are being supported by the American Red Cross.
The Streator Fire Department also acknowledged assistance from Vermillion Valley Dispatch, ComEd, Nicor, and Illinois American Water in managing the incident and aftermath.
