Charleston, WV – A powerful winter storm continues to blanket portions of West Virginia with heavy snow, causing hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7 a.m. Friday.
According to the weather service, snowfall totals will range between 6 and 12 inches, with higher ridges seeing the greatest accumulation. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, further reducing visibility and increasing the potential for blowing snow.
Affected areas include Upshur, Barbour, and portions of Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas, and Randolph counties. Major towns such as Buckhannon, Elkins, and Summersville are expected to see dangerous conditions. Travel will likely remain difficult throughout Thursday and into Friday morning.
Residents are urged to take precautions when venturing outside. Officials recommend having an emergency kit in vehicles, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case of being stranded. Commuters should anticipate slick roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
Snow began early Thursday morning and will persist throughout the day. Road visibility is expected to worsen during the evening hours as gusty winds intensify. Travelers are encouraged to monitor road conditions through the state’s 511 service.
This winter storm marks one of the season’s most severe weather events for the region, with heavy impacts expected across central and northern West Virginia. For the latest updates, visit the National Weather Service website or check local road conditions online.
