Birmingham, AL – Central Alabama is bracing for heavy snow, with up to 5 inches expected to accumulate Friday night. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Winter Storm Watch, effective from late Thursday night through late Friday night, as a significant winter storm approaches the region.

According to the NWS, snow and sleet will begin late Thursday, with the heaviest snowfall likely during the day Friday. Areas affected include Jefferson, Shelby, Blount, Talladega, and Marion counties, as well as surrounding regions. In addition to snow, periods of freezing rain may complicate conditions, making roads, bridges, and overpasses particularly hazardous.

Officials warn that travel could be difficult or impossible, with icy conditions impacting both the Friday morning and evening commutes. Motorists are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Those who must drive are advised to winterize vehicles, allow extra time, and practice extreme caution.

The storm is expected to taper off early Saturday morning. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the NWS and prepare for possible power outages and extended travel delays.
