St. Louis, MO – The National Weather Service is warning of significant rainfall and flash flooding risks across the Heartland through the weekend and into next week, with heavy downpours expected to affect large portions of the Southern Plains and Midwest.
Rainfall totals of over five inches are forecast for parts of North Texas, eastern Oklahoma, and southwest Missouri. Areas including Wichita, Springfield, and St. Louis will experience some of the highest rainfall totals, as shown in the latest forecast. The NWS has issued a Moderate Risk for excessive rainfall on Saturday, April 19, which could lead to significant flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along waterways.
According to the NWS, multiple rounds of heavy rain are likely, especially throughout the weekend, with impacts from flash flooding likely in areas with poor drainage or steep terrain. The weather service advises residents to be prepared by having multiple ways to receive weather warnings and to avoid driving or walking through floodwaters. Flash floods can develop rapidly and be life-threatening, and the NWS recommends taking immediate action to move to higher ground if floodwaters begin to rise.
Flash Flooding Safety reminders urge people not to underestimate the danger of flooded roads or areas. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” is the key message from the NWS, as roads may be impassable or washed out by the heavy rains.
Residents across the affected areas are encouraged to stay informed and remain cautious throughout the weekend and into next week as this storm system moves east.
