Hastings, Nebraska – Temperatures are set to plunge below freezing overnight, putting crops and outdoor plumbing at risk between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday across central Nebraska.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Freeze Watch is in effect for much of central and northwestern Nebraska as clearing skies and calming winds allow temperatures to drop into the mid-20s in some areas. Locations near Kearney, Grand Island, and Lexington could see widespread frost, while colder pockets farther northwest may dip well below 32 degrees.

Friday will bring a different concern first, with northwest winds gusting between 30 and 45 mph through the afternoon. These winds, combined with dry air and temperatures in the upper 40s to low 60s, could elevate fire weather concerns before conditions rapidly cool after sunset.

By Saturday afternoon, temperatures rebound into the mid-50s to low 60s, but breezy conditions and low humidity may again create near-critical fire weather, especially in open rural areas.

Residents should cover sensitive plants, disconnect or protect outdoor hoses, and be prepared for a sharp temperature drop overnight. Additional advisories remain possible as conditions evolve into the weekend.
