Hastings, Nebraska – Residents across south-central Nebraska should prepare now for isolated severe thunderstorms capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail after 6 p.m. Thursday, with storms tracking along major corridors including US-6 and Highway 281 through the late evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a few strong to marginally severe thunderstorms are possible Thursday evening into the overnight period. The primary hazards include hail up to one inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph. While tornado risk remains low, brief heavy downpours and lightning will accompany stronger cells.

Storms are expected to develop late Thursday afternoon and intensify during the evening as they move northeast. Communities along and south of I-80, including Grand Island and Kearney, may see storms between 7 p.m. and midnight. Hastings and York could experience the strongest wind gusts as storms pass along Highway 34 and Highway 81.

Drivers on I-80 and Highway 281 should be prepared for sudden crosswinds and reduced visibility in heavy rain. Loose outdoor objects could be blown around, and isolated tree limbs may come down if 60 mph gusts materialize.

Residents are urged to secure patio furniture, charge mobile devices and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings Thursday evening. Even isolated severe storms can intensify quickly after sunset.

Storm activity should gradually weaken after midnight as it shifts east. Additional updates may be issued Thursday if storm coverage increases or if warnings become necessary.
