Detroit, Michigan – Drivers along the Michigan-Ohio border should use caution immediately as patchy freezing drizzle may create slick spots on I-75 and US-23 through mid-morning Tuesday before temperatures climb above freezing.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a slight chance of freezing drizzle or mist will linger early Tuesday near the Ohio line, especially in Monroe County and southern Wayne County. Surface temperatures hovering near 32 degrees could allow light glaze formation on bridges and untreated ramps through about 9 or 10 a.m.
By afternoon, temperatures rise into the low 40s across Metro Detroit, reducing the icing risk on major corridors including I-94, M-39 and the Southfield Freeway. Cloud cover will hold firm, but road conditions should steadily improve as pavement temperatures warm.
The broader story this week is a warming trend. Highs climb into the upper 40s and low 50s Wednesday and Thursday, then surge into the 60s by Friday and Saturday. That warmer air brings increasing rain chances late Thursday into Friday, with wet pavement likely along I-96, I-275 and I-696 during peak travel times.
There is also a chance of thunderstorms Friday into Saturday as a stronger system approaches the Great Lakes. While severe weather is not guaranteed, periods of heavier rain could reduce visibility and cause ponding on freeways.
Motorists should slow down on elevated roadways early Tuesday and allow extra stopping distance. Conditions improve this afternoon, but a wetter pattern develops late week. Additional updates will follow if freezing drizzle expands or if stronger storms take shape heading into the weekend.
