Grand Forks, ND – Strong winds and possible thunderstorms are expected across North Dakota today, with the National Weather Service warning of gusts reaching up to 40 mph in the north and central Red River Valley.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the strongest winds are forecast to develop late Monday morning into the afternoon, with peak gusts between 30 and 40 mph in cities such as Hallock, Grafton, Cooperstown, and Devils Lake. Winds are expected to gradually decrease after sunset.

Forecasters also note that showers and thunderstorms may develop throughout the day, with the greatest chance along and near the Canadian border. Towns such as Devils Lake, Langdon, and Cando could see precipitation chances between 45% and 60% by mid-afternoon. Further south, areas including Fargo and Valley City will have lower rain chances, around 10% to 30%.

The combination of gusty winds and scattered storms may make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles on open stretches of highways. Outdoor activities could also be impacted by sudden downpours or strong gusts.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and monitor updated forecasts. Conditions are expected to improve overnight as winds subside and storm chances taper off.
