CROWN POINT, IN – A Lake Village man is in critical condition after a serious crash on Interstate 65.

According to Indiana State Police the incident, occurred at the 251.0 mile marker, leaving the driver, Austin Slivka, 25, severely injured. However, thanks to the heroic actions of two good Samaritans, his life was saved.

Preliminary investigation say Slivka’s car had rear-ended another at a high rate of speed, causing a chain reaction involving another vehicle and a truck. The force of the crash caused Slivka’s left arm to go through the front windshield, resulting in major lacerations. Fortunately, two quick-thinking men, identified by State Police as Kevin Kohn from St. Augustine, Florida, and Charles Hilltunen from Indianapolis, sprang into action. They applied tourniquets to his injured arm, effectively controlling the bleeding until emergency responders arrived.

Their prompt and selfless intervention proved to be lifesaving for Mr. Slivka, who was rushed to Franciscan Health in Crown Point for immediate medical attention. The accident led to the closure of all northbound lanes for approximately one hour.
