Atlanta, Georgia – Darkening clouds may seem distant this Sunday afternoon, but forecasters are tracking a familiar summer pattern that could quickly turn busy roadways into rain-slicked trouble spots. Thunderstorm chances are set to increase across metro Atlanta as a wetter stretch develops heading into Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, scattered thunderstorms remain possible across north and central Georgia through the afternoon and evening. Some storms could produce gusty winds, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall. Localized flash flooding remains a concern, especially in areas that have recently received significant rain.
Sunday begins on a quieter note. Temperatures are expected to reach around 88 degrees across Atlanta with a mix of sunshine and developing clouds. Rain coverage should remain limited through much of the afternoon, but conditions become more active later in the day and especially Sunday night.
Meteorologists are now tracking a stronger round of showers and thunderstorms for Monday. Rain chances increase to 60 percent, with showers becoming more widespread after midday. Southwesterly winds could gust near 25 mph ahead of developing storms.
Drivers along Interstate 75, Interstate 85, Interstate 20, Georgia 400 and the Downtown Connector should prepare for changing conditions Monday afternoon. Wet pavement, reduced visibility and brief ponding of water could slow travel during heavier downpours.
The primary threat remains heavy rainfall and lightning, though isolated stronger storms cannot be ruled out. The National Weather Service notes a few storms through the week may become strong to severe, capable of producing gusty winds and additional heavy rain.
For now, outdoor plans remain manageable Sunday, but keep a close eye on the sky. Conditions may deteriorate quickly during developing thunderstorms.
Rain and thunderstorm chances continue through much of next week, with daily opportunities for afternoon and evening storms across north Georgia.
