Charlotte, North Carolina – Bright sunshine is taking center stage across the Charlotte metro this Sunday afternoon, but the calm conditions won’t last forever. Summer heat is strengthening across the Carolinas, and forecasters are watching for thunderstorms to gradually return as the new workweek begins.
According to the National Weather Service, Sunday will be one of the quietest weather days of the upcoming week across Mecklenburg County and much of the Piedmont. Temperatures are expected to climb to around 91 degrees under mostly sunny skies, while light southwest winds provide only limited relief from the growing warmth.
The weather pattern begins shifting Monday.
Meteorologists are tracking increasing moisture moving into the region, bringing a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Monday. High temperatures will again reach around 91 degrees, while southwest winds could gust as high as 30 mph ahead of developing storms.
Drivers along Interstate 85, Interstate 77, Interstate 485 and Independence Boulevard should prepare for rapidly changing conditions Monday afternoon and evening. Dry roads during the morning could become slick quickly if thunderstorms develop during the evening commute.
The threat for widespread severe weather remains low, but any thunderstorm can produce lightning, brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Tornado potential appears very limited at this time, though residents should continue monitoring updates as storms approach.
Tuesday brings another chance of afternoon thunderstorms with temperatures near 90 degrees. By Wednesday, slightly cooler air arrives with highs settling closer to 87 degrees, although scattered showers remain possible.
For now, outdoor plans, sporting events and travel conditions look favorable Sunday. Keep hydration in mind during the afternoon heat, especially if spending extended time outdoors.
Long-range outlooks continue to support above-normal temperatures across the Carolinas through late June, reinforcing a steady summer pattern across the region.
