Raleigh, NC – Freezing rain is expected to develop late tonight, creating potentially icy conditions on roads near the North Carolina-Virginia border, including I-95 and surrounding highways. Drivers in the region should use extreme caution, especially during the early morning hours when temperatures hover near freezing.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain is likely to begin after midnight, with the highest risk between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. Monday. While ice accumulation is expected to remain light—up to 0.01 inches—it could cause slippery conditions on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads. Temperatures are forecast to rise above freezing by early morning, transitioning the precipitation to rain and reducing ice risks after sunrise.

The warming trend will continue throughout Monday, with rain becoming more widespread after 5 a.m. and a high near 51°F by afternoon. New rainfall totals could reach up to half an inch. Monday night will see clearing skies as temperatures drop to 26°F, potentially refreezing any lingering wet surfaces.

Looking ahead, Tuesday will bring sunny skies with a high near 42°F, followed by clear, cold nights dipping into the low 20s. Wednesday and Thursday will remain dry and sunny, with highs ranging from 38°F to 40°F.

Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and exercise caution on roads tonight. Stay updated with the latest alerts from the National Weather Service and prepare for freezing rain and changing road conditions.
