South Bend, IN – Temperatures will fall to near 33°F by midnight, triggering widespread frost that could damage crops and sensitive plants across northern Indiana, southwest Michigan, and northwest Ohio before sunrise Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Frost Advisory is in effect from midnight EDT (11 p.m. CDT) to 9 a.m. EDT Sunday. A more significant Freeze Watch follows late Sunday night through Monday morning, when temperatures could drop as low as 25°F across the tri-state region.

Cities including South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Warsaw, and Marion will see frost develop on exposed surfaces overnight, with the coldest readings just before sunrise. Similar conditions extend into Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Michigan, and east into Defiance and Van Wert, Ohio. While major routes like I-80/90, US-30, and I-69 should remain clear, early travelers should plan for frost-covered windshields and patchy ground fog reducing visibility.

The more damaging cold arrives late Sunday night. Subfreezing temperatures near 25°F could kill unprotected vegetation and harm early planting efforts across counties from La Porte and St. Joseph to Allen and Adams, and north into Berrien County, Michigan. Residents should cover or bring in plants, disconnect hoses, and insulate outdoor plumbing to prevent damage.

Conditions improve after 9 a.m. Sunday, but another rapid temperature drop begins after sunset. Additional alerts may be issued as confidence increases in the Monday morning freeze.
