Tallahassee, Fla. – Hot and increasingly dry weather is settling across the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, with temperatures climbing into the middle and upper 90s through Saturday while rain chances remain well below normal. Even hotter conditions are expected to develop early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, only isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected through Saturday, mainly along the afternoon sea breeze. Most communities will remain dry as highs climb into the mid to upper 90s, while heat index values rise into the low 100s during the hottest part of the afternoon.
High temperatures are expected to reach around 95 to 97 degrees in Tallahassee, Dothan, Albany, Valdosta, Bainbridge, Perry and Tifton, with Panama City forecast in the low to middle 90s and Apalachicola remaining cooler in the upper 80s because of the Gulf breeze. Overnight lows will stay in the low to mid-70s, providing only limited relief from the daytime heat.
The National Weather Service says rainfall will remain limited, with many locations seeing only 5% to 20% chances for afternoon showers through Saturday. That combination of prolonged sunshine and high temperatures will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those working or exercising outdoors.
Residents should drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
The hot pattern is expected to intensify early next week, with temperatures remaining in the middle to upper 90s and heat index values continuing to climb. Additional heat-related advisories may be issued if conditions become more dangerous.
