According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, locations include shelters in Gary, Hammond, East Chicago, and surrounding areas. Shelters like the Calumet Township Multi-Purpose Center and Jean Shepherd Community Center in Hammond are available during business hours. Riley Park Hall in East Chicago operates overnight through Tuesday.
Additional resources include shelters for specific groups. Brother’s Keeper and Serenity House in Gary assist men, while transitional housing options like Caring Place in Valparaiso welcome families. Cedar Lake Town Hall also opens as a warming center, but prior notification is required by dialing 911.
Residents needing transportation can contact the City of Gary’s service using “Code 32.” Local bus operators will try to assist as needed.
