Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers against inhaling nitrous oxide products sold through major retailers including Amazon and Walmart, after reports tied their misuse to serious health risks such as frostbite and limb weakness.
According to the FDA, the products—commonly marketed under brand names like Galaxy Gas, ExoticWhip, FastGas, and NITROX—are intended for culinary use in whipped cream dispensers. However, the growing trend of recreational inhalation has led to rising cases of severe neurological and physical complications.
“These nitrous oxide canisters may seem harmless, but inhalation can lead to long-term or even permanent damage,” the FDA stated Wednesday. “Symptoms include tingling, numbness, weakness in the arms and legs, and in some cases, frostbite due to improper handling of the pressurized gas.”
The advisory noted that the affected products are sold online through Amazon.com, eBay, and Walmart.com, and also found in physical retail locations such as smoke shops, gas stations, and vape stores across the country. The FDA recently updated its watch list to include newer brands like ExoticWhip and FastGas.
Other health risks associated with nitrous oxide misuse include impaired bladder function, psychiatric disturbances, vitamin B12 deficiency, blood clots, and paralysis. Chronic inhalation may result in irreversible spinal cord or brain damage, even after use is discontinued.
Consumers who have used these products and are experiencing symptoms are urged to contact a healthcare provider immediately. The FDA says it will continue to investigate reports and take necessary actions to protect public safety.
