Elmhurst, Ill. — Elmhurst Police Department reported that K-9 Ozy passed on June 5. His passing came after an abdominal issue required emergency surgery.

Ozy was brought to the veterinarian for surgery on Tuesday, June 3. He was initially recovering well, but declined on Thursday, June 5 and passed. His partner, Officer Brandt Cappitelli, was at his side.

Ozy joined the force in 2019, when he became Cappitelli’s partner. The police department acknowledged that he was “an exceptional patrol canine” that performed in criminal apprehension, searches, tracking, narcotics detection and officer protection. Elmhurst Police noted his excellence in officer protection when Ozy apprehended a criminal possessing a stolen handgun. The department noted how Ozy was loved by the Elmhurst community through his presence at neighborhood roll calls, school visits, citizens police academy classes and other community events.

The department said they consider K-9’s as active members of the department and police family.

“Ozy will always hold a special place in the hearts of Elmhurst Police Officers and the Elmhurst community,” the news release said. “Ozy’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the community he protected.”
