Jackson, KY – A warm, humid, and unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue across eastern Kentucky through the Memorial Day weekend, bringing repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms along with a growing flooding concern.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, torrential downpours could lead to localized flooding, especially Friday into Friday night and again early next week as multiple waves of rain move across the region.

Forecasters also warned isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible during the extended holiday weekend.

Rain chances remain elevated each day through at least Tuesday, with widespread shower and thunderstorm activity expected across communities including Hazard, Pikeville, Morehead, London, Prestonsburg, Jackson, and surrounding portions of eastern Kentucky.

Friday carries the highest immediate rain chances, ranging from 90% to 100%, with temperatures expected in the low to upper 70s. Additional showers and storms are forecast Saturday through Memorial Day, with rain chances generally remaining between 50% and 80%.

By Sunday and Tuesday, temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 70s and lower 80s while humid conditions continue fueling afternoon thunderstorm development.

Officials warn repeated heavy rainfall over already damp ground may quickly overwhelm drainage systems, creeks, and low-lying roads during stronger storms.

Residents planning outdoor Memorial Day weekend activities are encouraged to closely monitor changing forecasts and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

Travel disruptions, lightning, gusty winds, and isolated flooding may occur during periods of heavier thunderstorms through early next week.
