St. Charles, IL — On Tuesday, May 27, the City of St. Charles announced that it would be making new improvements for pedestrians. The two changes include a new pedestrian crosswalk and refuge island. The changes will be made to the downtown area. These projects will begin the week of June 2.

The pedestrian crosswalk will be added across Main Street at the 1st Street Plaza entrance. The city also plans to shorten the wait time for the existing “Walk” signal to cross safely. In conjunction with these projects, the sidewalk at the north entrance of the plaza will be updated with new traffic signal heads. Signal poles will also be relocated to align with the new pedestrian crosswalk. Work on this project will begin in June and will be finished by September.

Drivers should expect changing traffic patterns and delays both ways between 2nd Street/IL Route 31 and Riverside Avenue. New traffic patterns may include shifting lanes, lane closures and brief road closures. Signs alerting new traffic patterns will be posted.

A new refuge island will also be added across lanes on Illinois Street. The lanes will also be reduced to add new bicycle lanes between Riverside Avenue and 1st Street.

Drivers should anticipate traffic delays on the Illinois Street bridge and on Illinois Street from South 1st Street to Riverside. Temporary disruptions will also occur on the sidewalk and entrance to Fox Island Square.
