Delaware wakes up to damp pavement and lingering mist, but skies begin to brighten as the morning pushes forward. That brief break will not last long. Clouds regroup through the afternoon, setting the stage for another round of wet roads and slower travel.
According to the National Weather Service, Wilmington, Newark, New Castle, and nearby Philadelphia will see a 30% chance of showers developing after 5 p.m. Light rain may seem minor, but it can quickly create slick conditions on I-95, I-295, and Route 202 during the evening commute from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Low-lying stretches near Brandywine Creek and underpasses in downtown Wilmington could see brief water pooling, reducing visibility and increasing stopping distance.
This is part of a broader system pushing east from the Lower Mississippi Valley, feeding moisture into the Mid-Atlantic while keeping temperatures below average. Highs reach near 66°F today, but the cooler, damp pattern lingers into the weekend.
Scattered showers return Saturday afternoon after 2 p.m., again creating intermittent slick travel and reduced visibility. While rainfall amounts stay light, repeated rounds could keep roads wet for extended periods. A brief thunderstorm cannot be ruled out, though severe risk remains low.
Conditions improve Sunday with mostly sunny skies and highs near 61°F, followed by a steady warm-up into Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures climb into the 70s and near 80°F by Tuesday, signaling a shift toward early summer warmth. Longer-range trends point to above-normal temperatures continuing into next week.
Plan for slower travel late today, avoid water-covered roadways, and allow extra time on major routes as showers move in during the evening commute.
