Davenport, Iowa – Drivers along I-80 and I-74 should prepare for a sharp uptick in rain and wind by 6 p.m. Friday, when a strong system could bring widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms into the Quad Cities.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, scattered showers remain possible south of Highway 34 tonight, with lows dipping near 30 degrees north of the metro and closer to 40 degrees toward Burlington. Rain coverage increases Wednesday night into Thursday as moisture deepens across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois.
The most impactful period arrives Friday afternoon into Friday night. Rain chances climb to as high as 90 percent, with highs surging into the mid-60s to mid-70s ahead of the system. Wind gusts could approach 40 mph along I-80 and US-61, creating crosswind concerns for high-profile vehicles. Periodic downpours may reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways, especially during the evening commute.
Communities including Bettendorf, Moline and Rock Island should anticipate wet pavement and slower travel Friday evening. While severe weather is not guaranteed, a few thunderstorms could develop as the system pushes east.
Conditions begin to improve by Saturday morning as rain tapers, though breezy weather may linger.
Motorists should monitor updates and allow extra travel time Friday afternoon and night. Additional statements may be issued as the storm system strengthens heading into the end of the workweek.
