Hastings, Nebraska – Drivers along US-281 and Highway 34 should prepare for isolated strong thunderstorms after 7 p.m. Thursday, with wind gusts up to 60 mph capable of creating hazardous crosswinds through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Marginal Risk for severe weather remains in place across south-central Nebraska Thursday into the overnight hours. While many storms will stay below severe limits, a few could intensify enough to produce quarter-size hail and wind gusts near 60 mph. The overall tornado risk remains very low.

Storm development is expected to begin late Thursday evening and continue into the overnight period, impacting communities from Hastings and Grand Island to Kearney and Holdrege. The strongest cells may briefly track near I-80 and US-6, where sudden downpours could reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways.

Because storm coverage may remain scattered, not every town will see severe weather. However, any stronger thunderstorm that forms could quickly produce hail large enough to dent vehicles and damage crops. Wind gusts near 60 mph may also knock down small tree limbs and cause isolated power outages.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and remain weather-aware Thursday evening. Those traveling along I-80 should monitor changing conditions and avoid unnecessary trips during active warnings.

Storms are expected to weaken after midnight, but additional updates may be issued if stronger cells develop Thursday night across the region.
