Corpus Christi, Texas – Drivers across the Coastal Bend could face flooded streets and dangerous low-water crossings by late Tuesday night as a new round of heavy rain targets South Texas during the middle of the holiday travel week.
According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, a Level 2 excessive rainfall risk has been issued for portions of the Coastal Plains from Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Forecasters say the setup brings at least a 15% chance of flash flooding, especially in areas that receive repeated rounds of thunderstorms overnight.
The greatest concern stretches from Corpus Christi and Rockport inland through Alice, Beeville, Sinton and Victoria, where slow-moving downpours could quickly overwhelm drainage systems. Portions of U.S. 77, Interstate 37 and low-lying rural roads may see standing water before the Wednesday morning commute. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid driving through flooded intersections and to charge electronic devices ahead of possible lightning-related outages.
Beach conditions remain quieter through the Memorial Day weekend, though officials continue advising swimmers to watch for rip currents along the Gulf shoreline. Daytime highs across South Texas are expected to stay in the 80s and low 90s before storm coverage increases midweek.
Rain chances are expected to diminish toward the end of the workweek, but additional flood advisories or thunderstorm alerts could be issued if rainfall totals increase Tuesday night.
