Chicago, Illinois – A Chicago Ridge tow truck driver was arrested after Illinois State Police said he allegedly took and sold a stolen vehicle from Interstate 94, prompting a multi-vehicle investigation.
According to Illinois State Police, 36-year-old Saeed E. Mustafa was arrested Feb. 27 following an extensive investigation into stolen vehicles in the Chicago area.
Troopers said the case began Feb. 12 when a victim reported their vehicle stolen from the Bishop Ford Freeway, I-94 near Beaubien Woods, after a crash. Police said the driver had contacted a private towing company and left the scene. When the contracted tow truck arrived, the vehicle was gone.
Investigators identified a tow truck allegedly driven by Mustafa traveling in the area at the time. Police allege Mustafa transported the vehicle to a local junk car company and provided paperwork falsely claiming he had authority to sell it.
Further investigation revealed Mustafa allegedly brought multiple vehicles to the same junk company in exchange for cash, authorities said. Troopers later determined several of those vehicles had been reported stolen in Chicago and Indiana.
On Feb. 27, troopers located the suspect tow truck on I-94, conducted a traffic stop and took Mustafa into custody.
According to ISP, Mustafa was charged with six counts of Conspiracy to Receive/Possess/Sell a Stolen Motor Vehicle, a Class 2 felony. He was pending his first court appearance as of Monday.
The charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
This case may draw attention among commuters and gig-economy drivers who rely on private towing services after crashes.
